'Tall Trees Catch More Wind'

Narrative Short.

WRITER / ART DIRECTOR / EDITOR

A Collaboration with Dutch speakers, & DOP Abdullah Harun Ilhan.

'In Translation' is an anthology film, each story evoking the narrative of an untranslatable word. This project explores how we can use art direction & collaboration to represent cultures better, & depict untranslatable ideas within film. These words have been translated into stories. This project has been crafted in collaboration with people and imagemakers speaking these languages, exploring the untranslatable aspects of their culture.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

'Tall Trees Catch More Wind', is part of a film series called 'In Translation'. It is crafted in collaboration with people and filmmakers speaking diverse languages, with the aim of firstly bringing diverse knowledges to the screen, as well as exploring untranslatable words and concepts from cultural experiences in visual form. It investigates how our languages are a form of expression that affect the way we see the world. Using art direction & filmmaking, the films aim to reflect cultural mindsets around the stories we tell today. They also evoke notions of the untouchable and undefinable parts of identity, rooted in the deep unconscious often non verbal aspects of cultural experiences. 'Tall Trees Catch More Wind' is the first of three, with plans to make a larger selection of short films into an anthology. A large pool of qualitative research and collaborative effort has made this project possible, with thanks going out to all the participants and film collaborators who have contributed so far.
